Aveda Backstage: Ann Yee SS14, New York Fashion Week

Aveda has joined forces with Detroit-based fashion designer Ann Yee (2013 CFDA Swarovski Award for Menswear Winner), Osklen (Brazil’s top luxury brand)), as she incorporated what’s going on right now at the heart of the city, during New York Fashion Week 2013.

The latest collection called Resurgence – showcases light and trendy design based on texture, color-blocking, and architecture feel incorporated into each pieces which Ann Yee described her latest collection as “spirited…effortless…and authentic” and it’s inspired by her cousin and brother.

Her pieces include tweed dress, color-blocked top, perforated faux leather, and cropped tops with muted colors such as ivory, grey, and taupe with a splash of periwinkle blue, mint, and rouge. Each piece is ready-to-wear (RTW) and fit easily as your everyday outfit while making a statement.

And Ann Yee worked together with Aveda Global Styling Director Allen Ruiz to create hairdos in what he referred as “urban street style colliding with shiny, modern elegance” for the Ann Yee Spring/Summer 2014 presentation.

Braided hair gets a place as the style mimics the ‘survival spirit’ of the collection. Stylish yet edgy.

• Part the hair into three sections and apply each side with Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam to add shine for each strand





• Gather hair thoroughly from the temple and form a tight braid down to the neck. Secure the lock with a clear hair tie, repeat on other side. Gather both braids at the nape of neck
• In the middle section, gather the top half, rolling them and pin it into a structure twist

A woodsy kind of hairdo gets the attention. Full of body, full of texture, this is how we do it:

Prep the hair with Aveda Pure Abundance™ Style Prep™. Blow dry with fingers, directing the hair away from the face to add texture and volume for the hair

Mist small sections with Be Curly™ Hair Spray and working from the nape horizontally, wrap each section with U-pin in figure-8 pattern. Secure with pin.

Hold the section with flat iron for twenty seconds to set the shape. Gently release the pins and brush with wide-toothed comb.

Backcomb few sections at the crown and sides to create volume while maintaining the curls above the forehead, working from hairline back to the top

Using your fingers gently direct hair away from the face and divide into two main sections. Tie them into a knot at the nape (tuck the ends) while folding the hair toward center to create a twist

Secure with bobby pins and spray Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray for a strong hold
